Engaging Virtual and Augmented Reality

Tourism

The Ask:

As the world is moving into meta verse, the concept of augmenting the past at the present was always an experience that users appreciate. One of my first projects was to design a customer experience in one of Abu Dhabi Forts and museums to make it a memorable visit.

Key goals:

  • Increase visits to historical and cultural sites of Abu Dhabi

  • Increase engagement and visit time

  • Create a memorable experience and deliver history in an interactive way

  • Promote Abu Dhabi as a culture city

Results:

The biggest challenge was to preserve the authenticity and history of the archeological sites while installing new technologies. So, we had to involve Interior design experts to support the installation of beacons, way-finding tools that connects to the app and trigger the experience while on the site. The app was developed using Google ARCore technology to deliver close to reality augmented experience on site, and VR experience off-site with gamification to redeem rewards. After many site visits, and continuous test and learn,  visitors were able to scan objects within the historical sites (like Qasr Al Hosn- Abu Dhabi) and view a live demo of the history in a narrated story or interactive games. Which results in higher rates of app downloads, and increased visit time than the regular estimated on the site.
